Festival de Calaveras Literarias

.​​​OCCA presents Festival de Calaveras - Celebrating Day of the Dead at ArtPark, 331 Singleton Blvd., Dallas, Texas, on October 31st.


The celebration showcases Mexican traditional Calaveras in a beautiful setting at ArtPark. Enjoy the Festival de Calaveras surrounded by art, sculptures, lights, and the City skyline. Craft beer and a full bar will be serving spirits and the restaurants at Trinity Groves will be open for dining.


4 PM to 6 PM

Trick-or-Treating, free for children to enjoy thanks to in-kind sponsor Super Mercado Mexico.


4 PM to 8 PM
La Catrina Dallas - is an 18-foot-tall classy lady wearing a blue dress and iconic hat, over a skeletal frame - a size 0. Miss Catrina will officially be unveiled and will welcome all patrons to ArtPark. She will even strike a pose for selfies. In-kind Sponsor: Home Depot - Oak Cliff. Artist: Sal Barron.

Community Altar. The centerpiece in many homes is the Day of the Dead altar. We invite you to place a photo of your loved one(s) that has/have passed, along with other mementos and ofrendas. Free.


6 PM to 7 PM

Danza Azteca will open the evening's program with the danza, a rich cultural form of expression performed to the beat of drums; dressed in native attire and wearing elaborate headdresses.


7 PM to 8 PM

Calaveras Literarias, aka calaveritas will be read by local poets, thesatirical poems make fun of people (alive and kicking) by setting them in funny situations while La Huesuda aka La Calaca, Flaca, or DEATH chases them and tries to take them away to the afterlife.


8 PM to 9 PM

Catrina & Catrin Contest & Catwalk - the public is invited to compete for the Catrina Dallas title & the Oscarina Award, a golden Catrina figurine handcrafted by artist Lilia Estrada. The Catrina's will parade through The ArtPark in a stunning exhibition of fashion, painted faces, and hat. They will compete for the prizes of $500, $300, and $200.


9 PM to 10 PM

Dance & Music for Remembering the Dead. The most beloved songs will be interpreted by local musician Richard Palomino (also a member of Los Musicos Band). Expect to hear songs like La Llorona, Amor Eterno, and more.


Store. You may purchase Day of the Dead products, merchandise, and an altar starter kit for your home. Remember Dia de Los Angelitos is November 1 (infants and children who have passed away in the youth); and November 2, Dia de Muertos when the altar is set up, with a photo of our loved ones and ofrendas.
