Oak Cliff Coalition for the Arts
Canto y Grito! - Celebrando National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Canto y Grito is a cultural expression of Hispanic heritage with cultural performances, poetry, and a ceremonial grito - cry for independence. The Oak Cliff Coalition for the Arts (OCCA) kicks off the Dallas National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration every September 15 at the Latino Cultural Center Plaza, 2600 Live Oak Street, Dallas.
The National Hispanic Heritage Month started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson. It became a law on August 17, 1988. President Ronald Reagan expanded it in 1988 to cover 30 days beginning on September 15 and ending on October 15, when many community groups from across the nation celebrate their history, culture, and contributions to society.
